Every year, about 2 million bones break due to osteoporosis, a condition that causes bone mass to diminish and become more porous and vulnerable to breakage. Most of those affected are women who comprise about 80% of osteoporosis cases.

Most of those affected are women who comprise about 80% of osteoporosis cases. But even at 20% of cases, men with osteoporosis can represent almost half a million broken bones.

For some the risk of developing osteoporosis is even greater due to their experiences, habits, and other health conditions.

Risk factors:

  • Are you a past or current cigarette smoker or do you drink alcohol 3 or more times per day?
  • Have you taken corticosteroids, antidepressants, or antiepileptics?
  • Have you had breast cancer, prostate cancer, low testosterone, or your ovaries removed?
  • Do you have thyroid disease, digestive disease, diabetes, COPD, or rheumatoid arthritis?
  • Are you NOT getting enough dairy, sunlight, or physical activity?
  • Do you have chronic inflammatory disease?
  • Are you a woman aged 65 or older? Are you a man aged 70 or older?
  • Have you had a bone break after age 50?
  • Are you a woman of menopausal age with risk factors or a postmenopausal woman under age 65 with risk factors?
  • Are you a man aged 50 to 69 with risk factors?
